Most Vikings lived near the sea.  
Their main form of  transport was 
by ship

Longships
• Longships were made
of long planks of
wood and they were
very strong.
• They were also slim
and sleek and could
sail in shallow water
as well as open sea.
• They could also be
carried overland.

More Facts
• Each oarsman sat on a wooden chest packed with their 
belongings
• When coming in to land the Vikings sometimes hung their 
shields over the sides of the ships.
• The ships were decorated to make them look like dragons.
