    CRISIS PREPAREDNESS

    CRISIS PREPAREDNESS
    There are no “experts”
    Prepare a district level plan
    Individualize plan for your
    school
    Principal must be involved in
    development

    CONTROL of CRISIS
    Someone call “911”
    Demonstrate control
    Remain composed
    Police, Custodian or
    Maintenance man?

    VICTIMS
     Focus on protecting lives and assisting injured
     Assign a first aid team
     Provide CPR trained staff
     Develop a crisis kit: painter’s mask, gloves,
    flashlight, schematic drawing of the campus
    buildings, list of enrolled students and contact
    numbers, old cell phones (charged), first aid kit
     Store blankets
     Student ID’s
     Send teacher to hospital with injured

    LOCKDOWN
     Lock all classroom and outside doors
    Assign someone to stay at the main
    entrance
    Make sure all students are in classroom
    Don’t use code names
    Utilize intercom
    Check hallways and restrooms
    Principal calls all clear

    PARENTS
     Be prepared for parents who will come to school
    very emotional
     Provide communication to parents
     Place trusted staff member outside
     Assign parents to serve on Crisis Team
     Send parents to unification area
     Don’t block entrance to school
     Prepare a parent only meeting

    TEACHERS
    Account for students
    Reassure students
    Report missing or extra students
    Secure doors and close windows
    Remain calm
    Provide evacuation instructions or all clear
    Walk students to unification area
    Participate in debriefing before being
    dismissed

    COUNSELORS
    Pre-approved local crisis counselors
    Assign a gatekeeper
    Provide counseling for teachers
    Provide counseling for parents
    Know when it is time to move on
    Establish memorials

    MEDIA
     Take control of the situation
     Establish a school PR person
     Identify a district supervisor who sets ground
    rules for media, organizes, “The principal will
    be giving a statement shortly.”
     Setup a media area – media must stay in
    room or leave campus
     Acquire a media sign in sheet, record driver’s
    license and name tags (call media by name)

    MEDIA
    School spokesperson have a mission and
    stay with mission
    Remember to “Feed the Piranha”
    Keep media away from students
    Be Truthful
    Know media’s rights
    Address the local media first

    STUDENTS
     Want to be under care of an adult
     Need open and honest communication
     Adults must be available for students
     Read students needs
     Provide counseling by teachers and peers
     Dismiss to parents in an orderly fashion
     Provide sign out for students
     Upon returning the next day, meet and greet
    students

    OFFICE STAFF
    Serves as frontline for communication
    Protects the principal’s time
    Determines to whom you talk
    Should have a written statement to read
    for phone calls
    Must notify injured students parents
    Should have sign out sheets ready

    ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM
    Serves as a liaison with police and
    emergency workers
    Provides student roster and parents
    names and phone numbers
    Should have yearbooks available
    Must not disturb evidence
    Should document the details of the crisis
    and actions taken

    BUILDING LAYOUT
    Know where to turn off:
    1. AC
    2. Alarms
    3. Gas cut-off
    4. Water cut-off
    5. Sprinklers
    6. Power main panels
    Have a list of hazardous materials

    SAFETY COMMITTEE
    Should have lLarge involvement
    (including students)
    Establish goals
    Review existing plan
    Know the local emergency resources
    (district and community)

    LAW ENFORCEMENT
    Walk through in the summer
    Have SWAT team practice in building at
    night
     Invite police for lunch or coffee (free)
    Control intersections (traffic control)
    Keep school driveways open
    Crowd control
