Internet Explorer is Microsoft s Internet browser This browser has features that let you surf the Web faster Internet Explorer helps you enter Web addresses correctly It keeps track of the Web sites you visit and lets you store an easy access list of your favorites sites It also makes searching for information easier than ever and will let you surf offline Every Web site has an address just like a building in a city Often this address is called a URL pronounced by reading each letter YU ARE ELL You need to know this address if you want to visit a specific Web site or page If you have the URL for a Web site or page that you want to visit 1 Click on the white space inside the IE5 Address bar 2 Type the URL of the page You don t need to type http because IE5 automatically includes it 3 Press the Enter key on your keyboard
Some URLs are quite long with lots of different words divided by slashes It s often quite a challenge to type in the whole thing and people can confuse a forward slash with a back slash That s why IE5 includes AutoCorrect a special tool that automatically recognizes and corrects typos that would otherwise prevent you from visiting the Web page you want to go to
IE5 keeps track of Web sites you ve visited so you don t have to type in the entire URL every time If you want to return to a site you ve seen before you can type part of the URL and AutoComplete will give you a list of possible matches from sites you ve visited before To visit a Web site using AutoComplete 1 Begin typing the URL into the Address bar As you type AutoComplete lists possible matches in a drop down box under the Address bar
2 Click one of the URL matches to go to the Web site you want to see You can also turn off the AutoComplete setting To turn off the AutoComplete setting 1 Click Tools on the Menu bar and then choose Internet Options The Internet Options dialog box appears 2 Click the Content tab 3 In the Personal information area click the AutoComplete button The AutoComplete Settings dialog box appears 4 Click the check box to turn off AutoComplete This feature is disabled if there is no check mark in the check box
To search for information using the Search Button 1 Click the Search Button on the toolbar The Search window opens on the left side of the screen 2 Click the Find a Web page radio button at the top A one line search box appears 3 Click in the search box and then type classroom tutorials or whatever it is you want to find
4 Click the Search button A list of possible matches appears in the window
5 Click on one of the matches The Web site appears in the main IE5 window The list of links remains in the Search window on the left 6 To go to a different Web site in the list click another match TIP To start a new search click the New button in the Search window A search engine is a special Web site designed for people who want to find something on the World Wide Web There are lots of different search engines on the Internet and IE5 links to nine of them These nine search engines take turns at being the featured provider of the day
To change search engines 1 Click the Customize button in the Search window The Customize Search Settings dialog box appears 2 Click the radio button labeled Use one search service for all searches The Choose the Search Service drop down box appears
3 Click on the search engine of your choice 4 Click OK on the Customize Search Settings dialog box To see a list of related links 1 Make sure you have a Web site in your main IE5 window 2 Click Tools on the Menu bar and choose Show Related Links The Search window opens on the left side of the screen Inside is a list of related links
3 Click on a link to visit one of the related Web sites The new Web site appears in the main IE5 window
Fortunately you can use IE5 s History list to go back to any one of the sites you ve seen and it keeps track of all the sites you ve viewed in the last few days hours or minutes To open the History list 1 Click the History button on the toolbar The History window appears to the left of the main IE5 window complete with all your History links
A Web site is made up of Web pages Some Web sites have only one page while others are composed of dozens of pages The History list keeps track of which Web pages you ve visited and organizes them in a variety of ways To view links in the History list by date 1 Click a week or day in the History bar A list of Web site folders appears
2 Click a Web site folder to display individual pages and then click the page icon to display the Web page
To set the number of days pages are saved in the History list 1 Click Tools on the Menu bar and then choose Internet Options The Internet Options dialog box appears 2 Click the General tab 3 In the History area click the spin control to change the number of days that the History list keeps track of your pages
4 Click OK on the Internet Options dialog box To clear the History list 1 Click Tools on the Menu bar and then choose Internet Options The Internet Options dialog box appears 2 Click the General tab 3 In the History area click the Clear History button The Internet Options pop up box appears Click OK in the Internet Options pop up box
4 Click OK in the Internet Options dialog box
To add a link to your Favorites list 1 Go to the Web page you want to add to your Favorites list 2 Click Favorites on the Menu bar then choose Add to Favorites The Add Favorites dialog box appears containing a name for the link
3 If you want to give your link a different name type it into the Name text box However you don t have to change the name if you like what s there already
4 Click OK in the Add Favorites dialog box TIP If you are renaming a link in the Add Favorites dialog box try to be specific Favorites lists can grow quickly and old links are as memorable as leftovers in the fridge To view links in your Favorites list
1 Click the Favorites button on the toolbar The Favorites window appears to the left of the main IE5 window complete with all your Favorites links TIP If the Favorites window is already open you can add a new link by clicking the Add button above the contents of the list To create a Favorites folder 1 Click the Favorites button on the toolbar The Favorites window opens on the left side of the screen 2 Click the Organize button The Organize Favorites dialog box appears
3 Click the Create Folder button A New Folder file appears on the list of files in the Organize Favorites dialog box The words New Folder are highlighted in blue
4 Type a name for your folder over the highlighted New Folder text and press the Enter key
5 Click the Close button on the Organize Favorites dialog box You can create as many folders as you like and once you ve done this you can start moving your Favorites links into their new folders To move your Favorites links into new folders 1 Click the Favorites button on the toolbar The Favorites window opens on the left side of the screen 2 Click the Organize button The Organize Favorites dialog box appears 3 In the Organize Favorites dialog box select the link you want to move by clicking on it
4 Click the Move to Folder button The Browse for Folder dialog box appears 5 Click a folder you want to move the link to
6 Click OK on the Browse for Folder dialog box 7 To move more links into folders repeat steps 3 through 6 When you are finished moving links click Close on the Organize Favorites dialog box You can reorganize your Favorites list by renaming links or deleting links you no longer use To rename a link 1 Click the Favorites button on the toolbar The Favorites window opens on the left side of the screen 2 Click the Organize button The Organize Favorites dialog box appears 3 Find the link you want to rename and select it 4 Click the Rename button The link is highlighted in blue
4 Type a new name for the link and press the Enter key 5 To rename more links repeat steps 1 through 4 When you are finished renaming links click Close on the Organize Favorites dialog box To delete a link 1 Click the Favorites button on the toolbar The Favorites window opens on the left side of the screen 2 Click the Organize button The Organize Favorites dialog box appears 3 Select the link you want to delete by clicking on it 4 Click the Delete button The Confirm File Delete dialog box appears 5 Click Yes in the Confirm File Delete dialog box
2 6 To delete more links repeat steps 3 through 5 When you are finished
deleting links click Close on the Organize Favorites dialog box There is a multitude of violence offensive language and sex on the Internet However this fact need not scare you away from letting kids enjoy all the other great stuff in the World Wide Web You can use IE5 s Content Advisor to filter out content that s inappropriate for children By turning on the Content Advisor you can ensure that only approved content will be displayed in IE5 and you can adjust the settings yourself by accessing it with a password To enable the Content Advisor 1 Click Tools on the Menu bar and select Internet Options The Internet Options dialog box appears
2 Click the Content tab 3 Click the Enable button in the Content Advisor area The Content Advisor dialog box appears
IE5 has divided adult content into four categories Language Nudity Sex and Violence These categories were created by the Recreational Software Advisory council a non profit group based in Washington D C You can choose where to draw the line in each of these categories
For example within the Language category you can choose to restrict access to the following levels Level Level Level Level Level 0 1 2 3 4 Inoffensive slang Mild expletives Moderate expletives Obscene gestures Explicit or crude language
To adjust Content Advisor Levels for the first time 1 With the Content Advisor dialog box open click one of the categories in the list 2 Drag the slider to set the limits you want
3 Repeat the above two steps for each category you want to limit and then
click OK in the Content Advisor dialog box When you first use Content Advisor you are prompted to create a Password in the Create Supervisor Password dialog box 4 Type a password into the Create Supervisor Password dialog box You need to do this twice first into the Password text box and then into the Confirm Password text box
5 Click OK on the Create Supervisor Password dialog box 6 Click OK on the Internet Properties dialog box TIP Forgetting a password is a lot more common than you may think It s a good idea to write down your password and keep it in a secret place just in case
You can turn the Content Advisor on or off whenever you want but only if you know the password To disable the Content Advisor 1 Click Tools on the Menu bar and select Internet Options The Internet Options dialog box appears 2 Click the Content tab 3 Click the Disable button in the Content Advisor area The Supervisor Password Required dialog box appears
5 Type your password into the Supervisor Password Required dialog box and click OK
6 Click OK in the Internet Properties dialog box To enable the Content Advisor after you have turned it off 2 1 Click Tools on the Menu bar and select Internet Options The Internet Options dialog box appears 2 Click the Content tab 3 Click the Enable button in the Content Advisor area The Supervisor Password Required dialog box appears 4 Type your password into the Supervisor Password Required dialog box and click OK 5 Click OK in the Internet Properties dialog box You may want to add or remove IE5 s toolbars depending on what you re doing with the program Maybe you only want to see the History toolbar on one day Then another day you may only want to see the Search toolbar It s up to you You can make a toolbar disappear if you aren t planning to use it in the near future This is a good way to clear room for the toolbars you do plan to use
To see which toolbars you are currently using 1 Click View on the Menu bar and choose Toolbars The list of Toolbar names appears Names with check marks beside them are toolbars that are currently active
To add a toolbar 1 Click View on the Menu bar and choose Toolbars The list of Toolbar names appears 2 To add a toolbar select it from the list A check mark appears next to the name in the list and the toolbar instantly appears To delete a toolbar 1 Click View on the Menu bar and choose Toolbars The list of Toolbars names appears 2 To delete a toolbar click on it to remove the check mark The toolbar instantly disappears
You can also add or remove buttons depending on how often you use them You may want to delete a button if you never use its associated feature You may want to add a button if you start doing something you haven t done before like searching for information on the Internet To add or remove buttons 1 Position the pointer over the Standard Toolbar 2 Click your right mouse button the button on the right side of the mouse A pop up menu appears 3 Click Customize The Customize Toolbar dialog box appears
4 To add a button click one of the choices in the Available Toolbar Button section and click Add 4 To delete a button click one of the choices in the Current Toolbar Button section and click Delete
You can choose to label your buttons with text or not In other words you can see the Stop button in one of these two ways
TIP You may want to label the buttons when you first start using IE5 Then once you re more familiar with them you ll want only the picture symbol It s a matter of personal preference To add or remove text labels from buttons 1 Position the pointer over the Standard Toolbar 2 Click your right mouse button the button on the right side of the mouse A pop up menu appears 3 Click Customize The Customize Toolbar dialog box appears 4 To add text labels to buttons select Show Text Labels from the Text options drop down list
5 To remove text labels from buttons select No Text Labels from the Text options drop down list
Internet Explorer 5 lets you set up a Shortcut that gets you to your favorite Web site as fast as possible The Shortcut is stored on your desktop with the rest
of your programs All you do is double click it to open Internet Explorer and you ll whip right into the site You can set yourself up to go to the same Web page every time you open IE5 This opening Web page is called the Home page When you are surfing around the Web you can return to your Home page any time you like Simply click the Home button
TIP Be sure to pick your very favorite Web page when you re setting your Home button If your school has a Web page that s a great choice A page that you visit regularly also makes a good Home page To set a new page for the Home button 1 Go to the Web page you want as your opening page 2 Click Tools on the Menu bar then choose Internet Options The Internet Options dialog box appears 3 Click the General tab 4 Click the Use Current button in the Home Page section
6 Click OK in the Internet Options dialog box A Shortcut lets you open IE5 and jump to a pre set page all in one swift motion You can save time by creating a Shortcut that is stored on your Windows desktop along with all the icons you double click to open other programs When you doubleclick the Shortcut icon IE5 will pop open and look for the pre set page To create a Desktop Shortcut 1 Go to the Web page you want your Shortcut to lead to 2 Position your mouse somewhere on the Web page but make sure your mouse isn t over an image 3 Click your right mouse button A pop up menu appears
4 Select Create Shortcut in the pop up menu A confirmation window appears 5 Click OK to accept the setting The shortcut appears on your desktop TIP To remove a shortcut from your desktop select it by clicking on it once then press the Delete key on your keyboard When you go to Web pages IE5 saves them in a temporary folder called a cache pronounced CASH Then when you return to these pages you don t have to wait for them to load into your computer Instead of the usual wait you ll see the pages and images load very quickly Why Because the files are already in your computer in the cache You don t have to pull them one by one from the Internet But a cache can fill up When this happens pages do not load as quickly You can speed things up again by cleaning the cache When you clean the cache you delete all the Web page files that is stored in the cache To clean the cache 1 Click Tools on the Menu bar and then choose Internet Options The Internet Options dialog box appears 2 Click the General tab 3 Click the Delete Temporary Files button in the Temporary Internet Files section The Delete Files dialog box appears
2 4 Click OK in the Delete Files dialog box
5 Click OK in the Internet Options dialog box
Sometimes it is necessary to clean Internet files from your computer To do so Open My Computer Open C Open Windows folder Open Temporary Internet Files Warning This will delete all cookies placed in your computer
As you surf the Web you ll find a lot of things you d like to see again later You might even want to save something to share with a friend who isn t connected to the Internet IE5 lets you save text or images from the page This snappy program even lets you save entire Web page images and all To save text from the Web 1 Select the text on a page by holding down your mouse button as you move over it A blue highlight block appears over the text
2 Press the CTRL key and the C key on your keyboard at the same time This action copies the text 3 Open Microsoft Word or another text program
3 Place your cursor on an open Word page 5 Press the CTRL key and the V key at the same time This action pastes the text onto the page
7 Save the text in Word To save an image from the Web 1 Position your cursor over the image and right click A pop up menu appears
2 Select Save Picture As from the pop up menu The Save Picture dialog box appears 3 Give the image a name and find a directory on your computer to store it in
4 Click the Save button in the Save Picture dialog box TIP You can save a Web image to use as your desktop wallpaper Just right click the image then choose Set as wallpaper from the pop up menu Then check out your desktop
To save an entire Web page
1 With the page open in IE5 click File on the Menu bar and choose Save As The Save As Web page dialog box appears
2 Double click the folder where you want to save the page
3 Type a name for the page in the File name box 4 In the Save as Type drop down box select Web Page complete
5 IE5 saves the page and stores all the pictures in an images folder
You can get IE5 to notify you when new content is added to Web pages on your Favorites list You can save the page and then view it in IE5 when you are off line that is not connected to the Internet This option is valuable when you have limited access to Internet dial up lines It also lets you know when new information is available so you don t have to keep returning to the site to see if anything has changed This process is known as synchronizing a Web page To synchronize a page from your Favorites list 1 Click the Favorites button on the toolbar The Favorites lists appears in the left side window 2 Click Organize Favorites The Organize Favorites dialog box appears 3 Select the file you want to synchronize A Make Available Offline check box appears on the left side of the Organize Favorites dialog box
4 Click the Make Available Offline check box A Properties button appears under the Make Available Offline check box
4 Click the Properties button A Properties dialog box appears containing the name of your link 6 Click the Schedule tab Click the radio button beside Only when I choose synchronize from the Tools menu
7 Click OK on the Properties dialog box 8 Click Close on the Organize Favorites dialog box TIP To get your updates just click Tools on the Menu bar and choose Synchronize IE5 will visit the pages you have synchronized and download new information for you

Download
You can get a program over the Internet by downloading it That is you go to a Web site and follow a series of steps that will transfer a copy of a program to your computer over the Internet For example you can download the latest version of IE5 over the Internet by going to the Microsoft site It often takes several minutes or even hours to download a program It all depends on your modem speed the size of the file and how many other people are downloading from the same site To download a program 1 Go to the Web site you want to download from 2 Follow the site s particular download instructions This will vary from site to site but most sites have some type of Download Now button that you click The File Download dialog box appears
3 Click the radio button beside Save this program to disk and click OK in the File Download dialog box The Save As dialog box appears
3 Click the directory on your computer where you want to store the downloaded program Make sure you remember the directory You ll need this information when you install the downloaded program
TIP You can make a special temp directory where you save all your downloaded files Then you ll know just where to find them A downloading box appears showing the estimated time it will take to complete the download The downloading box also shows the files being copied to your computer Now all you do is wait while the download takes place
You know the download is complete when you see the Download Complete dialog box Then you need to follow a second process installing the program onto your computer To install a downloaded program onto your computer 1 Close any other programs you may have open 2 Click Open on the Download Complete dialog box This action opens the program s installation instructions Each program has a different installation but the following steps are typical
TIP If the Download Complete dialog box isn t visible locate the file you downloaded perhaps in your TEMP folder and double click the program icon This action will open the program s installation instructions 3 You may be asked to click a Continue or I Agree button which means you are endorsing a license agreement on how you are allowed to use the software The installation program launches
4 Follow the particular installation instructions Programs will differ but in general you will be asked where you want the program installed Select a location on your computer then click Next or OK An installation pop up box appears showing files being installed
5 When the program is installed the Installation Completed dialog box appears You may be asked to restart the computer You will find the new program within your program files when you restart the computer Text too small To change the text size in IE click
Browsing Offline
To browse a webpage when you are offline click the Favorites button and select Add
Check Make Available Offline and click Customize Choose your preferences and then click OK You can choose to manually synchronize the page and control if you choose to update the information on the site you have downloaded The page s and image files will download to your computer
To view this page offline open Internet Explorer click File Work Offline Note You must manually go to File and choose to go back online unless you shut down your computer After shutdown I E will go back into the online mode Click Favorites and then choose the site you have previously downloaded for viewing
